One of the first words I became quickly acquainted with upon moving to the LA area was the word SigAlert.

Tonight I was headed north from Orange County into Los Angeles. As I was getting ready to get onto the 605, traffic came to a halt. I wasn’t horribly annoyed as I know that traffic can get terribly congested and those things tended to work themselves out, but I decided to check the traffic report just in case.

It turns out a SigAlert had been issued for an injury accident on the 605 south.

If you don’t live in California, you might be wondering what a SigAlert is. Well, by definition, “a Sig Alert is defined by the California Highway Patrol as ‘any unplanned event that causes the closing of one lane of traffic for 30 minutes or more, as opposed to a planned event like road construction, which is planned separately.”

So all five lanes moved slowly for a good, long time until we came upon the scene that was on the 605 southbound. It was horrible. I have never, ever seen so many emergency response vehicles in one place at a time. It appeared that a rig overturned and 3 other vehicles were involved. What was also horribly, horribly sad was that one of the vehicles involved was carrying a trailer full of horses and some were trapped. There were multiple rescue teams there from police, fire, ambulance, and LA County Animal Control. Shutdowns ensued. They were leading the horses out of the trailer when I drove by.

It was probably the saddest thing I’ve seen since I’ve lived here.

And her name is Jen. She is coming to see me in early January. She is my best friend, my go-to girl, a role model, and one of the smartest people you will ever meet. She’s in grad school in Missouri and she makes me laugh harder than anyone I know. I can’t wait to see her.

Jen, I believe, will be in desperate need of some relaxation. I tend to be overzealous when it comes to planning, so I am holding myself back from breaking out a brand new college-ruled notebook to plan out her time here by the hour.

What I have decided to do is make a list of general places that blend the three following things:

1. Places and things I think Jen would enjoy.
2. Places and things I have fallen in love with in southern California and think Jen would like.
3. Some must-see spots for those visiting the West Coast.

Then, we can take it easy and decide what we’d like to do. If we don’t want to do anything, we’ll do that, too.

So, Los Angeles and Orange County buddies, I need your help. What are some places that she can’t miss when she is here? I’m not going to drag her around like a tourist.

Jen is an intellectual. She’s already mentioned visiting a few bookstores and old haunts of her favorite authors. Jen also enjoy coffee places. I have a few specific beach spots and restaurants that I’d love to take her to, but the point of this trip is for her to relax and see some of the stunning things that our beautiful area has to offer while catching up with an old buddy. Jen said she’d be thrilled just getting coffee, a book, and heading to the beach for a bit. We love to talk and there will be plenty of that going on. There will definitely be time spend on the Pacific Coast Highway. I have beach spots in Malibu, Santa Monica, and Dana Point that I’d like her to see. She also enjoys indie music and I’d like to find a good live performance at a small venue in LA.

Any ideas or specifics?

Around Christmas, Starbucks starts putting their red sprinkles on some of their seasonal beverages. To me, that makes the drink. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. When I worked at Starbucks, the customer would watch me intently just to make sure I did not forget to add sprinkles. The look of joy on their face when I added just a couple of sprinkle shakes more should be photographed and made into a coffee table book.

Anyway, there was a chill in the air when I made my hot chocolate this morning and I decided that today called for sprinkles.

And it was delightful.

…. was absolutely beautiful. Anyone familiar with Malibu canyon? Good. Well you know the tunnel? Yes? Good. So all along PCH it’s a beautiful morning, the sun is splitting the sky and there’s not a cloud to be seen. I pull onto Malibu Canyon Road and I see one huge cloud just hanging in the canyon. So in front of me, giant ominous looking cloud… behind me, giant hot sun. As I drive further I see the cloud is lingering around the entrance to said tunnel that you all agreed you know. This looks cool I’m thinking to myself. So I drive through the tunnel and come out the other side into some of the thickest fog I’ve ever seen. The sun has completely dissapeared and everyone has their lights on. I could hardly see twenty feet in front of me.

Now this is where it got beautiful. The further out of the canyon I drove the more the fog began to burn off and dissipate and there was about a two mile stretch where the rays of sun were coming through this thick hazy fog. I was driving through a gold tinted mist; it was otherworldy. Imagine row upon row of huge trees in the middle of a huge open area (the King Gillette Ranch for anyone that knows it) with fog all around them but with rays of this amazing golden sunshine splitting the leaves. It was very ethereal. If I could have had three wishes this morning they would be as follows; 1. I wish I was stoned. 2. I wish I had my camera. 3. I wish I wasn’t running late for work. I could have stopped and stared for hours until the last of the fog burned off.

Oh well, another time.

He gets it. It’s just damn beautiful.
